Wedding Gin-spiration from Ballinacurra
A sunny day on the terrace in Ballinacurra was made for a botanical gin + tonic! The renaissance of Gin seems to have crept up out of nowhere. But according to a recent Irish Times Article, we are actually amidst the second ‘gin craze’.
The first gin craze was during the first half of the 18th century in the UK when gin was cheap and fast to product. In fact at that time, the parliament stepped in with legislation to control its availability, causing it to be in more demand.
The success of Downton Abbey is being credited for making gin popular again and gin seems to have reinvented itself as a more high end tipple of a younger more well-travelled generation. In times past it had a reputation of being an older persons drink but these days it is well and truly taking on the vodka market in a big way. The craft of gin making has evolved and even the tonics that accompany it have had a drastic crafty makeover.
We are seeing lots of couples looking for fun ways to incorporate this trend into their wedding celebrations. Serving gin in a more botanical fashion way adds a little panache to the party. You will often see it being serves with grapefruit, orange, strawberry, cucumber, rosemary, sage and basil which adds wonderful colour to any soiree.
Lots of couples take their favourite gin cocktails and rename them after themselves to add a personal touch to the celebrations. A pop up gin bar where guests can add their own fruit and herbs is also very popular.
